Old school unix crypt implementations where poor, but modern unix crypts support a variety of hashes, including the likes of blowfish and multi-round SHA512. Adding crypt support on platforms that provide it means not needing to add a heap of password hash options, and LDAP servers that are already using crypt will work out of the box.
